Charpy & Izod Pendulum Impact Tester for Plastic
- ISO 179, ISO 180
Charpy and Izod pendulum impact testers measure the way in which plastics and other non-metallic materials react when struck by a sudden blow/impact. In these tests, a pendulum which has been released from a certain height hits the specimen, and the amount of energy it loses as a result of the impact indicates how much energy the material has absorbed before it breaks. In the Charpy test the specimen is placed horizontally so that it rests over two supports, whereas in the Izod test it is held vertically with one end fixed.
Since polymers require lower impact energies than metals, each test needs suitable pendulum settings and testing fixtures or accessories. The testers support Izod testing and Charpy testing of V-notched, U-notched, or unnotched specimens, providing impact energy and impact strength values for comparing materials, formulations, and production batches. Tests carried out at different temperatures can also reveal changes from ductile to brittle behavior. Applicable materials include plastics, hard rubber, glass-fiber-reinforced plastics, electrical insulation, glass ceramics, floor tiles, cast stone, and friction materials.
