Our HDT/Vicat testing machines heat plastic samples under a controlled load to determine their heat deflection and Vicat softening temperatures. The HDT test records the temperature at which a sample bends by a specified amount under load, while the Vicat test records the temperature at which a flat-ended needle penetrates 1 mm into the sample under a specified load. Both tests can run at the same time on separate samples, with precise temperature control and servo loading maintaining the required test conditions. HDT/Vicat testers are widely used in the automotive, electrical and electronics, construction, and packaging industries to compare plastic materials, improve formulations, and check product quality.

During HDT tests, the specimen is placed on two supports, then a specified load presses down at the specimen's center. After a short settling period, the sample is heated at a controlled rate and gradually bends under the load until it reaches the amount of deflection required by ISO 75 or ASTM D648. The temperature at that point is recorded as HDT.
For this test, a needle with a flat end rests against the thermoplastic sample under a set load. The tester gradually heats the sample, and the needle penetrates deeper as the plastic softens. Once it reaches a depth of 1 mm, the tester records the temperature, following ISO 306 or ASTM D1525.
